Burtons Solicitors awarded Gold rating in the Digital Conveyancing Maturity Index 2026

Burtons Solicitors has been awarded Gold in the Digital Conveyancing Maturity Index 2026. The Index is run by legal technology company InfoTrack and scores conveyancing firms on how they use technology at each stage of buying and selling a home.

Gold is an A grade and the second-highest of the Index'sfour award levels, after Platinum. Firms in the Gold band scored between 60%and 66.9%, while the average across all firms taking part this year was 43.5%.

What the Digital Conveyancing Maturity Index measures

This is the third edition of the Index. Firms answer detailed questions about how they work, and each answer is scored against the most digitally connected way of doing that task. A firm using the most progressive solution for everything would score 100%.

The 2026 Index covered six areas:

  • new enquiries and quotes
  • taking on a new client, including ID and source of funds checks
  • the legal work before completion
  • the work after completion, including the Stamp Duty Land Tax return and registering the new owner with HM Land Registry
  • how a firm's case management system, IT and records fit together
  • how a firm uses and oversees AI, which was added this year

The research was supported by industry bodies including The Conveyancing Association and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers.

What it means if you're buying or selling a home

The score is based on how we handle each sale and purchase day to day. ID checks are done electronically, and our work with Perfect Portal means you can see up-to-date progress on your matter online.

The technology takes care of routine admin and ensures accuracy and compliance throughout the process. Digital does not mean personal: our clients have one conveyancer as your main point of contact, and because our conveyancers have lower file limits than many firms, you're treated as a person, not a case number. Our conveyancing team are accredited members of the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality Scheme and we pride ourselves on the high degree of expertise and qualification within our team.

Ian Hardy, Partner & Head of Property Department (Firmwide): "Buying or selling a home is stressful enough without chasing paperwork. We've put a lot of work into making the administrative aspects of a property transaction quicker and more secure, so our team can spend more of their time with clients. It's good to see that recognised."

Local conveyancing solicitor or online conveyancer?

Plenty of people choosing a conveyancer weigh up a local firm against an online one. Online firms tend to be picked for speed and price alone, and a local solicitor for having someone nearby you can meet.

This result shows you can have both. We're a local firm with conveyancing solicitors in Kent, East Sussex and London, yet our systems scored well above the industry average. You can still meet our conveyancers in person or speak by phone. If you're comparing the two, our article on the risks of using a cheap online conveyancing firm covers what to look out for.
